celeste's yellow dress

On April 24, 2008, Celeste Marie Welch wrote to me:

So, I just finished my first year of art school at smfa [the School of the Museum of Fine Arts]...sigh...it was a long year; I took mostly performance and installation classes, but on my own time I discovered the world of crotchet and knitting. Basically I have become a traditional housewife only, my marriage is to my home and projects. And I am truly in love . . . . So I was thinking that I could crotchet you a dress, mail it to you and you could wear it and document it through your photography.

About a month later, a yellow dress arrived in the mail. After I took my first picture in the dress, I decided to include some friends in the pictures. I made up a rule that I would include only people who lived within walking distance of my apartment. I photographed the women in or close to their homes in Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, Fort Greene, Gowanus, Greenwood Heights, Park Slope, and Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
